i CO rf York Daily Record Sunday, December 17, 1989 MMMMMWli MUM t- -v. i i in. art -i Cactuses always fascinate, always survive Frost lins for -k must 1)2 consitlsred i Kmght-RuUer Nentpapers I dug out a section of a hill to accmnmodiie cars. Now, the line from my well to the bovve is 30 inches below ground level. Is this ta-p enough, or will the pipe freeze? -1- Plymouth, Mass.

1 1 Thirty inches is critical, even in Plymouth. The frost line is generally 3 feet down on the South Shore. You may go for years without freezing, then, wham! My bathroom has textured paint. Some of It got wet and washed right off, so 1 washed It all off. I replaced a section with plasterboard, taped and compounded the Joints and plan to paper.

The only problem is the new section Is indented 18 Inch, flow can I smooth It over? S.W., 1 i '( Taper that I8-inch rise by applying joint compound and smoothing if off 8 to 10 inches from the high wall, Use a 10-inch smoothing blade to aid a smooth transition. Before paper-ing, paint the wall with an oil-based wall paint. I plan to convert from oil to gas, I low can get I rid of the remaining oQ in the tank, and the tank itself? P.M.? Hanover, MassL Dont ask the Oil man to do it; he will not be amused. Since you have not made the conversion yet, run the burner normally until the tank is nearly dry. books with detailed illustrations and descriptions of the most popular kinds, such as the Royal Horticultural Societys recently published Wisely Handbook on Cacti.

(64 pages, For the more venturesome (and less busy), growing cactuses from seeds will prove a rewarding project and a thrifty way to start a collection. Seeds of some kinds may take many weeks to germinate. They are available from leading mail-order firms, generally as mixtures. How can I get Kafir lily to flower? It has large, healthy leaves but has not bloomed for several years. Several things influence flowering of a Kafir lily (Clivia miniata).

During fall and winter when the plant is in a resting stage, water just enough to keep the straplike leaves from wilting. At other times, keep the soil moist. Plants tend to flower best when grown in a 60 to 65 degree temperature and in a semisunny exposure. Do yews grow well where they get full sun? Wed like to make a foundation planting of them on the south side of our house. Most yews will grow satisfactorily in sunny situations, but care should be taken to plant them well away from the building line so reflection from hot summer sun will not scorch them.

I have stored some choice dahlia and canna roots In vermiculite in a box in our unheated garage. Will they winter over safely this way? Vermiculite is a fine storing medium, but an unheated garage is a risky place to keep them. The roots (or tubers) could freeze during extreme winter cold spells. A cool place in the basement would be a better place to store them. Is it possible to root slips or cuttings from a large crown-of-thoms? Cuttings of crown-of-thoms (Euphorbia splendens) are readily propagated by inserting them in moist sand.

Allow the cut ends of the stems to dry first in the open air to form a callus. When roots develop, pot up the cuttings in a mixture of equal parts peat moss, soil and sand. Questions cannot be answered individually, but those of general interest will be considered for future columns.

One of the more important factors favoring cactuses for the busy person is that are right at home in the warm, dry atomsphere of modern homes and apartments that is so detrimental to many leafy plants. Instructions for most cactuses say "Keep on the dry side," which means they need not be watered often, nor will they suffer if watering is neglected for an extended period. Actually, some cactuses will thrive in situations that are detrimental to other plants. Varieties of cactuses range widely from the spineless kinds that develop into dramatic specimens several feet tall, such as those of the Cereus or night flowering group, to the smaller peanut, button and hedgehog types However, sections or "joints fiom the larger-growing cactuses, such as the chollas, saguaros and prickly pears, can be rooted in sandy loam and will complement others in your collection until they outgrow them. With well more than 1,500 cactus species, it is impossible in limited space to describe the full range, but cactus bulls find it fun, as well as a challenge, to learn the identity of those they are growing Helpful in this respect are -6y ART K02ELKA Chicago Tribune 2 CHICAGO Being too busy to "pamper houseplants or too cramped for space to grow them is no reason not to enjoy tnem.

Simply choose cac-' tuses instead of conventional leafy plants. Always fascinating because of their curious, sometimes bizarre, forms, cactuses are never without interest, i Unlike the usual collections of sheffleras, weeping tigs, dieffenbachias 0d other indoor plants that demand meticulous attention, cactuses are rugged specimens with an inbred ability to survive under the most adverse conditions with little tare And where space is consideration. Cactuses can be most obliging. A sizable collection can be grown in dish gardens or other diminutive con- tamers. Even seedlings or rooted cut-; tings from the big fellows, such as the Saguaro or Old Man cactus, can be grown in such accommodations before they become large enough to become a problem.
