The use of the cockroach as a diuretic in certain diseases is almost universal in Russia, and is very general now in European medical practice as a cure for Brights disease. To what extent it may be used in Philadelphia is not known. BLYenner says that there is to be a perfect storm, of wind about the middle of January. Philadelphia Timer says tbe unsophisticated countryman who blows out the gas and thus furnishes a subject for both tbe Coroner and Undertaker has turned up again, this time at Rochester, Mew Yorfc. The constant recurrence of these fatal accidents call very loudly for some method of prevention which shall prove more of a safeguard than anything yet devised. It would naturally be expected that in this enlightened age no one could be ignorant of the dangers of escaping-gas, but the numerous fatal accidents hich are chronicled by the pres show conclusively that many people are ignorant thereof, and for that reason some very strict and careful measure should be devised to save these people from the fatal consequences of their own stupidity. XJE. At Leadvilic, a shooting affray occurred in a state street dance hall at two clock Saturday morning, the 16th in which two men received fatal wounds.

A dispute arose between two men named Miller and Cummings about paying for drink, when both drew pistols and commenced firing. The Philadelphia Timer was among the boldest pioneer in tbe cause of political Re-fevro. When its publication began, nearly sight years ago, it wat met with distrust by Ml Parties, with indifference by the many respectable party abettors of public jobber, with contempt by the then lordly Boes of the land and with thfi jeers of the dependent plunderers of every faith. Iu fearless exposure of the moat monstrous public abuses was regarded at licentiousness by the then steady, eay-geing people who are now voiced through the Committee of One Hundred, and tha submissive press of Philadelphia bad no generous words of encouragement for tbe desperate battle this journal accepted tingle-bahded, although all now pay just tribute to the independence of The Timet by imitation lh eincerest form of flattery. The Philadelphia Timet was founded nearly eight years ago as a thoroughly fearless and independent newspaper, and it has sever swerved for a day from its great mission. It baa boldly and impartially criticised public men and public measures as justice demanded, regardless of their political faith or power, and it haa favored or opposed the election of men to responsible trust with aingteness of purpose, looking to tbe elevation and purification of all authority, municipal, State and national.

It sought no favor from political parties, accepted no patronage from political power, but pursued tbe even teaor of us way without fear, favor or affection, until it can now point to a regenerated municipality, to a revolutionized State and to a self-asserting nation as the chaplets it can worthily wear. (The Philadelphia Timer will 'be in tbe future just what it ha beef in the past, save as it advances in every feature of enlightened anfi independent journalism. It will be. as it $vee baa been, tbe resolute, uncompromising foe of tbe Boss and tbe Spoils systems in politics, and it will ever regard integrity and patriotism in statesmanship, and in every foin of authority, and tbe supreme need of th country, regardless of its result iu hindering or promoting party interests. And it will continue to lead in all the qualities of the most progressive journalism, and maintain its high position as tbe most complete two cent newspaper published in the United States.

It will enter upon the new year with the largest number of reader it ever had since its publication began with its business largely increased in every department with the largest circulation to boua fide subscribers an 1 purchasers of any Philadelphia journal, with the single exception of tbe Ledger, and with the largest legitimate profits ever earned by any daily newspaper of iu years in the history of American journalism.
